The 5 Tips To Support Your Child’s Mental Health
To Define Mental Health…
Mental health encompasses emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences cognition, perception, and behavior. It also determines how an individual handles stress, interpersonal relationships, and decision-making. Mental health includes subjective well-being, perceived self-efficacy, autonomy, competence, intergenerational dependence, and self-actualization of one’s intellectual and emotional potential, among others. From the perspectives of positive psychology or holism, mental health may include an individual’s ability to enjoy life and to create a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.
Some Tips for the parents…
- Encourage them to share their feelings
It is important to acknowledge and understand their feelings, even if they are unpleasant. If they open up to you, you can respond with “I understand”, “it seems like a difficult situation” or “that makes sense”. - Resolve conflicts together
Be honest with your child. Let them know that you are under stress, too. Showing them how you handle difficult feelings can help them understand that what they are feeling is normal. - Self-care is important
Take time for your relationship. Try to meet some people and share your feelings and experiences with them. Take time for them every day and observe how you feel. - Make time to support them
Together, create new procedures and achievable daily goals. You can combine homework with schoolwork or set a goal, for example, to finish homework by dinner. - Track your child’s internet habit
Check your child’s online media habits. Talk to them about how much time they spend online and the need to protect themselves from online bullying and harassment. Reassure them that if they get into trouble or make a mistake online, you will be there to help them no matter what.
