ABOUT OPEN ENGLISH
Welcome to Open English. The books have been written and designed to help students learn English in the most effective and interesting way. Below is a brief description of the sections in each study unit at the Secondary 4 level.
Pre-tasks: Various resources and activities are used to present to students the theme of the unit, and then expand and deepen their understanding.
Pre‐reading
- introduces the unit theme through lead-in activities;
- provides opportunities for students to share their experiences and opinions about the theme; and
- introduces basic reading skills.
Reading
- provides a range of reading texts;
- presents targeted vocabulary items and grammar structures in these texts; and
- tailors the comprehension exercises to the HKDSE Paper 1.
Listening and integrated skills
- asks students to write a short text by making use of the reading materials and listening task; and
- tailors to the HKDSE Paper 3.
Vocabulary development
- extracts relevant vocabulary items from the reading texts;
- introduces vocabulary-building skills; and
- provides contextualized exercises.
Text type and grammar review
- studies the structures and writing style of a specific text type;
- introduces relevant grammar structures with explanatory notes and contextualized exercises; and
- asks students to make use of the targeted grammar items in the final task.
