Secondary English 1 Unit 5

The Open English, Secondary 1–3 textbooks are based on the Curriculum Development Council’s latest English language curriculum guide for junior secondary students. In each unit, there is a wide variety of theme-based materials designed to provide task-based learning. The materials are:

Pre-tasks: These include various resources and activities to stimulate interest in learning and provide authentic examples of the target grammar and vocabulary

Pre‐reading

• introduces the unit theme and engages students through interesting lead-in activities; and
• elicits students’ prior knowledge and provides them with opportunities to share their experiences and opinions.

Reading and listening

• introduces a variety of text types;
• presents targeted vocabulary and grammar;
• provides reading and listening comprehension exercises with a wide range of question types; and
• illustrates the features of a specific text type.

Vocabulary development

• covers theme-related vocabulary;
• introduces vocabulary-building skills; and
• reinforces learning with contextualized exercises.

Grammar focus

• introduces targeted grammar structures with explanatory notes; and
• reinforces learning with contextualized exercises.
