The Open English, Secondary 1–3 textbooks are based on the Curriculum Development Council’s latest English language curriculum guide for junior secondary students. In each unit, there is a wide variety of theme-based materials designed to provide task-based learning. The materials are:
Pre-tasks: These include various resources and activities to stimulate interest in learning and provide authentic examples of the target grammar and vocabulary
Pre‐reading
- introduces the unit theme and engages students through interesting lead-in activities; and
- elicits students’ prior knowledge and provides them with opportunities to share their experiences and opinions.
Reading and listening
- introduces a variety of text types;
- presents targeted vocabulary and grammar;
- provides reading and listening comprehension exercises with a wide range of question types; and
- illustrates the features of a specific text type.
Vocabulary development
- covers theme-related vocabulary;
- introduces vocabulary-building skills; and
- reinforces learning with contextualized exercises.
Grammar focus
- introduces targeted grammar structures with explanatory notes; and
- reinforces learning with contextualized exercises.
