Overview of standard Web technologies
Websites are created using a set of standard technologies. Many of these technologies involve markup and programming languages for encoding page content and specifying the appearance and interactive behaviour of Web elements. In this module, you are introduced to the most common Web development technologies promoted by the World Wide Web Consortium. You will also be guided as to how you can incorporate some of these technologies into your own webpages without the need to learn the details of the associated language.
Overview of standard Web technologies
‘If you’re going to build a house — or a website — you need the right tools. If your house’s foundation is good, the house will stand for years despite the changing world around it.’ I saw this excellent analogy describing the standard Web technologies for building websites on the popular reference site, A List Apart.
We will take a tour of the standard languages and technologies commonly used to build websites today. Many of these standards are promoted by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), such as HTML, XML, XHTML, Cascading Style Sheets and standardized JavaScript. We have a greater chance of creating reliable and wellformed websites by observing and using these standards. Using these standards also helps ensure that our sites will keep working even when they are viewed in new browser versions or even new kinds of devices in the future.
